KS3

Is your child not making expected progress in English? Are they struggling to understand class texts or develop their written responses? Do they have issues with spelling, punctuation or grammar?

With the new GCSE specification placing increased emphasis on the accuracy of students’ writing, it has never been so important to master the basics at KS3 level.

I offer creative, personalised sessions that follow the requirements of the KS3 curriculum to engage your child and develop their reading, writing and analytical skills. In addition to making excellent progress in years 7, 8 and 9, students will be fully prepared for the transition to KS4 and the rigorous demands of the GCSE specifications.

Specialised tutoring is also available for students who are sitting the 13+ common entrance exam.

GCSE

Is your child working below their target GCSE grade? Are they struggling with a particular text in class, or unsure about how to structure an effective analytical essay? Do they need help reinforcing what they have learned in school, or challenging further to achieve the highest grades?

The increased demands of the new GCSE curriculum mean it is now more important than ever that students walk into the exam room with excellent knowledge of their class texts and how to structure their responses. The increased emphasis on SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) means that accurate writing is now also essential to academic success.

As a GCSE examiner and author of GCSE resources, I have in-depth knowledge of the requirements of the English Literature and English Language examinations and what examiners are specifically looking for.

I have vast experience of teaching to all four of the major exam boards (AQA, EDEXCEL, OCR, and WJEC) and teaching the IGCSE syllabus.

Tutoring sessions will be carefully personalised to the individual needs of the student to help them to understand fully the requirements of the English Language and English Literature examinations and maximise their progress.

Intensive revision sessions are also available in the run-up to the exams.

In the last academic year, 100% of students tutored by Headstart English achieved or exceeded their original GCSE target grades.

PERSONAL STATEMENTS

Despite the rise in fees, competition for university places remains fierce, and universities are looking increasingly to personal statements to help them make their decision. Writing about one’s own attributes, experience and passion for a subject can be a difficult skill to master, especially in such a high-pressure situation.

As an experienced A-level teacher, I have expert knowledge of the expected structure, content and style of a personal statement, and have helped hundreds of students to gain admittance to their first choice of university.

Headstart English can help with everything from writing style, spelling, punctuation and grammar to advice about what to include and what to leave out.

Previous students of Headstart have been accepted to Russell group and Oxbridge universities, completing a wide range of degrees including engineering, English, medicine, veterinary science and physics.

One-to-one writing and editing sessions can be delivered in person to those who live locally, or via Skype to students based all over the UK and abroad.
